Cottage Grove Powwow

I would love to see a powwow in Cottage Grove, Oregon. In order to do this I am seeking to find out about local tribal elders, veterans and those who want to get involved in the organizing of the CG Powwow. I am seeking input here and suggestions too please comment below. Also seeking a Native name for this powwow.

CG POWWOW NEWS

We are currently exploring options on how to set the powwow up. We are in the first planning stages on reaching out to others who are experienced on setting up powwows. We are looking for people in the Cottage Grove, Oregon area who are willing to help organize this powwow. Any advice will be appreciated. We are starting the process of looking for possible collaborative efforts with other groups. 

Update Tuesday, January, 30th, 2024 due to the costs and time to plan this event we will be scaling this down to a round dance, easier to accomplish this goal and we still plan on working to organize a powwow for this area. We will keep you informed on making progress on this new project we want to put on.

A little about what a powwow is

The drum is the heartbeat of the people. Powwow is a time for the many tribes to gather to sing and dance but also for ceremony and prayer. The powwow is also a cultural gathering of many tribes to learn about each other and to sure their crafts with one another. The importance of intertribal relations is very important so they created many intertribal songs so that everyone can join in including non Native people to join in. The MC gives out information out and keeps the powwow going while the whip keeps protocol on the dance circle, drum groups give many Native style songs. The powwow committee helps organize the powwow and sets the time when the powwow is held. There is traditional powwows and contest powwows.
